Blocked Furnace Filters
Irreversible Damage Risk

The short answer
A blocked filter starves the system of air and makes it overheat. That kills blower motors, inducers, boards, switches, ignitors and compressors, and over time it can crack the heat exchanger. None of that damage is covered by warranty, because the manuals all require monthly filter checks.

To ensure your furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump operates safely and efficiently — and to help maintain your manufacturer’s parts warranty — please follow these important guidelines.
Monthly Filter Inspection Is Essential
Furnace filters must be inspected monthly and replaced or cleaned as needed. This requirement is stated in virtually all furnace manufacturers' user manuals.
- Pleated filters should typically be replaced at least once a month.
- Older, dirty, or blocked filters restrict airflow and cause the furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump to work harder and overheat.
What Restricted Airflow Can Damage
Restricted airflow places excessive strain on the system and can lead to failure of key components, including:
- Blower motor
- Inducer motor
- Control boards
- Pressure switches and other safety switches
- High-limit switches
- Hot surface ignitors and flame sensors
- Condenser fan motors
- Compressor (on air conditioning and heat pump systems)
Note
These component failures often result in intermittent problems that require multiple service calls. Such repairs are typically not covered under the manufacturer's warranty and are chargeable to the homeowner.
The Most Serious Risk: Cracked Heat Exchanger
Most importantly, long-term operation with a blocked or severely restricted filter can cause the heat exchanger to overheat and crack.
Do not skip this
A cracked heat exchanger may allow carbon monoxide — a colourless, odourless, and potentially deadly gas — to enter your home’s living space. This is one of the most serious safety consequences of neglected filter maintenance.
Warranty Implications
Damage caused by lack of regular maintenance — including failure to inspect and replace filters as required — is not covered by your furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump manufacturer’s warranty.
Manufacturers expect homeowners to follow the maintenance guidelines in the owner's manual. Neglecting filter changes can void coverage for related component failures.
Protect Your System and Your Home
The best way to avoid these problems is simple and inexpensive:
- Inspect your filter every month and replace or clean it as needed (most pleated filters should be replaced monthly).
- Schedule an annual furnace service and safety inspection with a qualified technician.
Regular filter changes and professional maintenance help keep your system running safely and efficiently, reduce the risk of costly repairs, and help preserve your manufacturer's warranty coverage.
Common questions
- How often should a furnace filter really be changed?
- Monthly inspection is the requirement stated in virtually all manufacturers’ user manuals, and most pleated filters should be replaced at least once a month. Replace or clean as needed at each check rather than waiting for a symptom.
- Will a blocked filter void my warranty?
- Damage caused by lack of regular maintenance, including failure to inspect and replace filters as required, is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. Manufacturers expect owners to follow the maintenance guidelines in the manual, so neglected filter changes can void coverage for the component failures that follow.
- What can a restricted filter actually break?
- Blower motors, inducer motors, control boards, pressure switches and other safety switches, high-limit switches, hot surface ignitors and flame sensors, condenser fan motors, and the compressor on air conditioning and heat pump systems. The failures are often intermittent, which means several service calls.
