The blower motor moves heated air through the ductwork, and its run capacitor supplies the phase shift a PSC motor needs to start and run. Capacitors are cheap and fail far more often than motors — always test the capacitor before condemning the motor. ECM motors are variable speed and are diagnosed differently from older PSC motors.

Blower Motors questions

Should I test the capacitor first?
Always. A motor that hums without starting is far more often a failed run capacitor than a failed motor. With power off and the capacitor safely discharged, measure it — the reading should be within about 6% of the microfarad rating printed on the can. Replacing a $20 capacitor is the first move, not a $300 motor.
What do I need to match on a replacement motor?
Horsepower, voltage, speed count, rotation direction, frame size, and shaft diameter all have to match, and the capacitor rating has to suit the motor. Photograph the motor nameplate — every one of those figures is on it.
Is an ECM motor different?
Yes. ECM motors are variable speed with onboard electronics and are programmed for the specific furnace, so they are not interchangeable with PSC motors and cannot be tested the same way. Order an ECM against your furnace model number.
