Furnace Flame Sensors

The flame sensor is a single metal rod that sits in the burner flame and proves the furnace actually lit. It works by flame rectification: the flame conducts a tiny current — measured in microamps — back to the control board. If that current stops, the board shuts the gas valve within seconds, because it has no other way to know whether gas is burning or simply pouring into your house.

  • Furnace lights, runs for 3–7 seconds, then shuts down and tries again
  • Several ignition attempts, then a hard lockout

Flame Sensors questions

Can I clean a flame sensor instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. A flame sensor fails because a thin oxide film builds on the rod and blocks the microamp signal. Shut off power and gas, pull the rod, and polish it with fine steel wool or an emery cloth — never sandpaper, which leaves grit and scratches that foul faster. If cleaning buys you only a few weeks, the rod has thinned or the porcelain insulator is cracked, and it needs replacing.
Why does my flame sensor keep getting dirty?
Rapid re-fouling usually means something upstream is wrong, not that the sensor is defective. The common causes are a partly blocked burner, incorrect gas pressure, a cracked heat exchanger, or poor combustion air. If you are cleaning the rod more than once a season, have the combustion checked.
Do I need the exact OEM flame sensor for my furnace?
Use the sensor specified for your model. The rod length, bend, and bracket position set how deep it sits in the flame, and a sensor that looks similar but sits wrong will read a weak signal and drop out intermittently — the hardest kind of fault to chase.
