Furnace Hot Surface Ignitors
We sell directly to the homeowner
A hot surface ignitor is a silicon carbide or silicon nitride element that glows to roughly 1,800–2,500°F to light the burners, replacing the old standing pilot. They are consumable: every ignition cycle thermally shocks the element, and most fail somewhere between three and seven years.
58 hot surface ignitors in stock, ready for same-day pickup at our Coquitlam warehouse or shipped worldwide.
Signs your ignitor may have failed
- No ignition at all, and no glow visible through the inspection port
- Ignitor glows but the burners never light
- Visible crack, blister, or white patch on the element
- Furnace ran fine until a power outage or short-cycling spell

Ignitors questions
- Never touch the element — why?
- Skin oil creates a hot spot that cracks the element on the next heat cycle. Handle a new ignitor by its ceramic base or bracket only. This is the single most common way a brand-new ignitor gets destroyed during installation.
- How do I test a hot surface ignitor?
- With power off, measure resistance across the two leads. A silicon carbide ignitor typically reads roughly 40–90 ohms cold, and silicon nitride considerably higher — check the spec for your part. An open circuit means it has failed. A cracked element can still read within range, so inspect it visually as well.
- Is a universal ignitor as good as the OEM part?
- A universal kit can work, but it ships with a generic bracket you have to adapt, and the mounting angle determines whether the element sits correctly in the gas stream. The OEM ignitor arrives with the right bracket and the right depth, which is why we stock them by model.
