High limit switches shut the gas off when the plenum gets hotter than the furnace is designed to run, which is what stands between a restricted airflow problem and a cracked heat exchanger. Fan and disc limits also start and stop the blower at set temperatures. A limit that trips repeatedly is almost always reporting an airflow fault rather than failing on its own.

Signs your limit switche may have failed
- Furnace heats briefly, then shuts down while the blower keeps running
- Repeated cycling on and off — short-cycling on limit
- Furnace blows cold air after the burners cut out
- Control board reports an open limit or a limit lockout

Limit Switches questions
- My limit switch keeps tripping. Should I just replace it?
- Replace it only after you have ruled out airflow, because a limit that trips is usually doing its job. Check the filter first — a clogged filter is the single most common cause — then closed or blocked supply registers, a dirty blower wheel, a failing blower motor or capacitor, and blocked return air. Fitting a new limit without fixing the airflow just resets the clock on a real overheating problem.
- What is the difference between the limit types?
- High limit switches are safeties that cut the gas on overtemperature. Fan and disc limits are controls that switch the blower on and off at set temperatures. The catalog splits these several ways, but they mount and diagnose similarly, so we list them together here.
- How do I pick the right temperature rating?
- Match the temperature stamped on the old switch exactly — for example L200. The setpoint is matched to your heat exchanger, and fitting a higher-rated limit defeats the protection it exists to provide. Match the mounting style and the shaft length too.
