Why Your Furnace Shows an Error Code and Will Not Start

The short answer
Most control boards check that the pressure switch is open at the start of a call for heat. If the switch is already closed while the furnace is idle, the board treats it as a fault, displays an error code, and never starts the inducer.
Read before you open the furnace
Never blow into or suck on the pressure switch tubing. The diaphragm inside the switch is very delicate and can be permanently damaged by even light pressure from your mouth. Damaging the switch can create an unsafe condition. This guide is for educational purposes only. Diagnosis and replacement of pressure switches should be performed by a licensed HVAC technician.

A pressure switch that is stuck in the closed position when it should be open will prevent the furnace from starting. Most modern furnace control boards check the position of the pressure switch at the beginning of a call for heat. If the switch is already closed, the board displays an error code and will not run the inducer or continue the ignition sequence.
What the Pressure Switch Does
The pressure switch is a safety device that confirms the inducer is creating proper draft before the furnace is allowed to ignite. Most residential furnace pressure switches are normally open.
- When the furnace is idle, the pressure switch should be in the open position. The control board expects to see an open switch before it starts the inducer.
- When the inducer starts and reaches proper speed, vacuum closes the switch. That closed signal allows the control board to continue the heating sequence.
- If the switch is already closed when the furnace is idle, the control board treats this as a fault, displays an error code, and will not start the heating cycle.
Why a Stuck-Closed Switch Stops the Furnace
Control boards are programmed to verify that the pressure switch is open before the inducer starts. This check helps confirm that the switch is functioning and that the sensing circuit is not shorted or stuck. When the board sees a closed switch at the wrong time, it locks out the sequence and shows an error code indicating the pressure switch is stuck closed.
Water or Restriction in the Tubing
In some cases, a droplet of water or another restriction in the rubber hose or tubing connected to the pressure switch can affect how the switch behaves and contribute to a stuck-closed condition or a related error code.
- Condensation can collect in the tubing, especially on high-efficiency furnaces.
- As a basic check, the tubing can be carefully removed and gently shaken to see whether any water droplets come out. Do not blow or suck on the tubing.
Protect the Pressure Switch Diaphragm
Every pressure switch contains a very delicate rubber diaphragm. Always treat the tubing and switch as sensitive components.
Do not skip this
Blowing into the tubing or sucking on it, even briefly, can stretch, puncture, or otherwise damage the diaphragm. A damaged switch may fail to operate correctly and should be replaced.
Most Common Outcome: Switch Replacement
When a pressure switch is truly stuck in the closed position, it usually means the switch itself has failed and needs to be replaced. A technician will typically:
- Confirm the switch is closed when it should be open, with the furnace idle.
- Inspect the tubing and sensing ports for water, debris, or restrictions.
- Test the switch and related wiring.
- Replace the pressure switch if it has failed.
When to Call a Professional
Homeowners can safely check for obvious water in the tubing, by carefully removing and gently shaking the hoses, and ensure the air filter is clean. Most other diagnosis — confirming switch position, testing continuity, inspecting the inducer and venting, or replacing the switch — should be done by a licensed HVAC technician.
A pressure switch stuck closed is a safety-related fault. The furnace will not operate until the condition is corrected.
Common questions
- Why does the board check the switch before the inducer runs?
- To confirm the switch is actually working. Verifying that the switch is open before there is any vacuum proves the sensing circuit is not shorted or mechanically stuck. Without that check a switch welded closed would let the board believe draft was proven when the inducer had never run.
- Can I clear a stuck closed error myself?
- You can check for the one homeowner-serviceable cause: water or a restriction in the tubing, found by carefully removing the hoses and gently shaking them. Never blow into or suck on them. If the switch is genuinely stuck closed the switch itself has usually failed and needs replacing by a technician.
- What is the difference between stuck closed and stuck open on the error code?
- Stuck closed is found before the inducer runs, so nothing starts at all. Stuck open is found after the inducer is already spinning but has not produced enough vacuum to close the switch. The two faults point at different causes even though both stop the furnace lighting.
