Furnace Thermocouples & Pilot Assemblies
We sell directly to the homeowner
A thermocouple is the safety device on a standing-pilot appliance. Heated by the pilot flame, it generates a small millivolt signal that holds the pilot gas valve open; if the pilot goes out, the signal collapses and the gas shuts off. Common on older furnaces, boilers, and water heaters.
11 thermocouples & pilot assemblies in stock, ready for same-day pickup at our Coquitlam warehouse or shipped worldwide.
Signs your thermocouple may have failed
- Pilot lights but goes out as soon as the knob is released
- Pilot will not stay lit even though the flame looks strong
- Pilot flame is weak, yellow, or lifting off the thermocouple tip

Thermocouples questions
- Pilot lights but will not stay lit — is it the thermocouple?
- Usually, yes, but check the flame first. The pilot flame should be blue and should envelop the top third of the thermocouple tip. A weak or yellow flame points to a partly blocked pilot orifice instead. If the flame looks right and the pilot still drops out, a working thermocouple should produce roughly 20–30 millivolts open circuit — below that, replace it.
- What length do I need?
- Thermocouples are sold by length — 18", 24", 30", 36". Take the length of the old one, or measure the run from the pilot assembly to the gas valve. Longer is generally safe as the excess can be coiled, but too short will not reach.
