Belt-drive blowers use a belt, pulleys, and shaft bearings to turn the squirrel cage, and they are still common in older and larger furnaces. Belts stretch and glaze, and bearings dry out — both are inexpensive parts that cause expensive-sounding noises.

Belts & Pulleys questions

How do I find the right belt?
The size is printed on the belt itself — for example 4L360 or A36. If the old belt is unreadable, measure the outside circumference and the width, or give us your furnace model number.
How tight should the belt be?
About half to three-quarters of an inch of deflection at the midpoint under moderate thumb pressure. Over-tightening is the most common installation error and destroys the motor and blower bearings.
